Create an impact with daylight design
Stand out by mastering daylight
At VELUX, we understand the complexity of daylight, which is difficult to grasp in any architectural project. It seems so obvious, yet intuition is no longer enough.
The Daylight Academy is an interdisciplinary collaboration of architects, students, scientists... all those passionate about daylight.
The ambition of the Daylight Academy is to provide you with the keys to make the obviousness of natural light a real added value in your projects.
This is where the VELUX Daylight Academy comes in.
It's not anymore about "what we can do for you", but also about "how we can design together in the best way".

Joël Sels, Senior Daylight Design Engineer @VELUX
A few words to introduce myself:
Today I'm a passionate teacher and researcher with over thirty years' professional experience in construction and architecture. I'm also a qualified BIM manager and graduated urban planner, which helps me to get to grips with very complex situations.
I've noticed that daylight is generally given too little consideration and priority in architectural projects, due to the difficulty we have in quantifying it and the lack of knowledge. Because natural light is so obvious, it is often not a priority in our thinking when designing projects. Today, intuition is no longer enough if we want to master this important factor.
Within the VELUX company, I had the opportunity to do some research to remedy this situation and explore the subject of ‘How to design with daylight in mind’ in greater depth.
Why participating in the Daylight Academy ?
I am a keen observer with a huge interest for the wonderful world of Daylight.
I like to inspire with ‘out of the box’ concepts, with the aim of exploring new directions together. It's all part of a holistic approach that includes new concepts such as ‘Morphing Spaces’ and ‘Compact Housing-The open Closed House’, which I'm also introducing to that Academy.
Over the past few years, I have had contact with a big number of architects and schools. Through my role at VELUX, I have also had the opportunity to spend time developing my expertise, my content, solving different architectural projects and listening to the needs of residents. I'm in constant dialogue with the world of architecture and project owners.
In everything I do, human beings and their well-being are at the center of the project. The idea that together we can create the house of tomorrow, a house source of well-being for everyone and accessible to everyone, is particularly close to my heart.
